What Should I Use for the Base of My Unicorn Basket?

When making unicorn baskets, you can use thick paper like cardstock or construction paper. You can also use things like crafting foam or thick felt. You can even use cardboard that has been painted white or even plastic.

The base is a simple cut and glued together project, and while it should be sturdy enough to hold shape, it is not designed to carry items of much weight. It can be used in an Easter basket, but I think it is better used for gifts to be given to your kids rather than for them to hunt and load with Easter eggs.

What Colors Can I Use For My Unicorn?

The unicorn is usually represented as white, but it doesn’t have to be. I have seen unicorns colored light pink or light blue too. However, get creative. Maybe the unicorn is rainbow-colored or purple. Since this is your craft, you can color the unicorn whatever color you like.

For mine, the body is white with a pink base below to create a shape for the basket to sit on. Of course, the handle is sparkling pink and the flowers are different shades of pink. The gold horn is pretty classic unicorn style, but I can see it is also white or silver. If you want to get an extra bit, make some rainbow-colored ribbon or yarn hair to go over the back of the handle to make it look like a unicorn mane.

What Should I Make the Horn Out Of?

I am making the horn of the paper unicorn basket using a piece of glitter gold craft foam paper Another option would be to use any stiff cardstock or cardboard that is white and then add gold glitter paper or glitter glue on top to make it sparkle.

You can make this horn out of anything. Any type of stiff paper will work as well as things like felt or foam. You can also use pieces of cardboard or plastic. Of course, you can always find a unicorn headband or other unicorn decoration that has a horn and remove it to use in this basket if you prefer. Whatever you use, make sure it’s sparkly!

What Other Ways Can I Decorate a Unicorn Basket?

There are many ways you can decorate a unicorn basket. that’s the fun of projects like this one, the base is easy to make, then you turn it into your own unique creation with additions. Below are some fun additions that I think work great with the mythical unicorn theme.

  • Add rhinestones, fake jewels, sequins, or beads for more sparkle.
  • Use pipe cleaners to create a mane, tail, or braided handle for the basket.
  • Make the unicorn base a sparkly basket with silver paper, glitter spray, or other light-colored sparkly paper.
  • Add unicorn ears with sparkle that includes some little rhinestone earrings.
  • Attach a fairy wand to the side to give it that magical feeling.
  • Make the unicorn horn a different color such as silver, white sparkles, pink, purple, or a mixture of colors in a rainbow swirl. Just don’t miss the sparkle and always add a bit of glitter or glitter spray to the horn.

What Can I Use This Basket For?

This fun little paper unicorn basket can be used for all kinds of things. Depending on what size you decide to make it, you can use it for small things like a basket on a desk to hold mail, paperwork, or kids’ art supplies. In a child’s bedroom, it could be on a desk for their jewelry, hair bows, or even just to hold things like their money or wallet.

Add it to the entry of your home and use it as a key holder or to hold other trinkets. As you make the paper basket larger, you can use it for things like flowers or even as a gift basket. This is the perfect little basket to hold all those things that are special to you, but you have trouble finding a space for them.

My favorite use for this unicorn basket is to make it a part of a unicorn-themed birthday party or event. Make several and put them on the buffet table to hold napkins, utensils, or even candy, crackers, cookies, or pasta.

How to Make a Unicorn Basket

This is easiest to make with craft paper, but for extra stability, I recommend using foam paper instead. On a piece of pink paper, trace a 6″ wide circle.

Then, around the outside of this circle, you will trace rounded triangle petals or flames. It will look like a flower or a bit like a sun like you would have drawn as a child.

Now, cut this out and set it aside. This will be the base of your basket.

Now, on the white paper, draw another 6″ wide circle.

Then, on the paper, on two sides, you will draw a rectangle about 4″ long and 2″ wide, but make the end rounded.

And on the other hand, draw on a curved wing or kidney shape. This is going to be the rounded side of your basket.

Now cut this out and you should have something that looks a bit like a butterfly.

On one of the wider sides, draw the two unicorn eyes with a half-circle then add eyelashes.

Now, bend the two smaller sides inward, and the larger sides upward.

Glue the curved ends of the sides over the smaller piece to create an open topped basket.

Now, glue the bottom of this to the center of that pink floral circle you cut out earlier.

Next, you will make the handle for your basket. I used strips of pink glitter foam paper that are about 1″ wide. Since this is just for show and not for holding weight, that works fine. Cut a strip that is about 12″ long and then glue it to the sides of the basket and pull over the middle to make the handle.

Now it’s time to make your unicorn horn. I freehand drew the shape onto the back of the gold glitter paper about 3″ tall.

Now, cut out the horn, and glue it to the center top of the handle on your basket.

Now, glue a few of the mini fake flowers around the base and sides of the horn.

Continue gluing until you have some along the top and just start to go down the sides of the handle.
